Caphosol and Pregnancy

Because Caphosol is not expected to have chemical effects in the body, it is considered a type of "medical device," rather than a medication. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not test medical devices to determine whether they are safe for use during pregnancy. However, it is probably safe for pregnant women to use Caphosol (although the full risks are currently unknown).

Can Pregnant Women Use Caphosol?

Caphosol® (supersaturated calcium phosphate rinse) is a prescription saliva substitute used to relieve dryness of the mouth and throat. It is also used to treat mouth sores (mucositis) associated with certain types of chemotherapy or radiation treatment.
Caphosol comes in the form of a mouth rinse. The medicine is normally swished around in the mouth, and then spit out. Caphosol is likely safe for use during pregnancy, although the full risks are unknown at this time.

More Information About Caphosol and Pregnancy

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) uses a category system to classify the possible risks to a fetus when a specific medicine is taken during pregnancy. However, Caphosol is considered a medical device by the FDA. Medical devices generally do not have chemical effects in the body. Because it is a medical device, Caphosol has not been assigned a pregnancy category.
There are no studies of Caphosol use in pregnant women or pregnant animals. However, the risks of using this mouth rinse during pregnancy are expected to be low, as very little of it is expected to be absorbed into the body after normal use. However, because it has not actually been studied during pregnancy, all of the possible risks to humans are not known at this time.

Final Thoughts

If you are pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant, let your healthcare provider know before using Caphosol. He or she will consider both the benefits and risks before making a recommendation in your particular situation.
