Zometa Side Effects

Nausea, fatigue, and fever are some of the most common side effects reported with Zometa. Side effects of the medication are generally minor and, in most cases, don't require medical attention. However, some Zometa side effects (while occurring infrequently) are potentially serious and should be reported to healthcare provider immediately, such as jaw or tooth problems, decreased urination, or an allergic reaction.

Zometa Side Effects: An Introduction

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with Zometa® (zoledronic acid); however, not everyone who takes the medication will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider.

Common Side Effects of Zometa

Zometa has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials, in which a group of people taking the drug have side effects documented and compared to another group not taking the medicine. This way, it is possible to see what side effects occur, how often they appear, and how they compare to the group not taking the medicine.
 
In these studies, the most common side effects of Zometa included:
 
  • Nausea -- in up to 46 of people
  • Fever -- up to 44.2 percent
  • Fatigue -- up to 39 percent
  • Anemia -- up to 33 percent
  • Vomiting -- up to 32 percent
  • Constipation -- up to 31 percent
  • Diarrhea -- up to 24 percent
  • Muscle pain -- up to 23 percent
  • Cough -- up to 22 percent
  • Joint pain -- up to 21 percent.
