Zofran® (
ondansetron hydrochloride) is a prescription medicine approved for the prevention of nausea and vomiting due to various causes. Specifically, it is licensed to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by:
- Chemotherapy (chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting)
- Radiation therapy (radiation-induced nausea and vomiting)
- Surgery (postoperative nausea and vomiting).
The use of Zofran in children for radiation-induced and postoperative nausea and vomiting has not been studied. However, the medication has been studied in children as young as four years old for chemotherapy-associated nausea and vomiting. Talk to your healthcare provider about the risks and benefits of using this product in children younger than four years old.
For children age 4 through 11, the usual Zofran dose 4 mg three times daily. The first dose should be given 30 minutes before the start of chemotherapy. The second dose should be given four hours after the first dose, and the third dose should be given eight hours after the first dose. For one to two days after chemotherapy, Zofran 4 mg should be taken three times a day (about every eight hours).
Children 12 years and older should follow Zofran dosing guidelines for adults.
