Zofran for Morning Sickness

Zofran® (ondansetron hydrochloride) is a medication often prescribed for nausea and vomiting due to several causes. Specifically, it is used to prevent nausea and vomiting associated with:

  • Chemotherapy (chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting)
  • Radiation therapy (radiation-induced nausea and vomiting)
  • Surgery (postoperative nausea and vomiting).

Healthcare providers may also occasionally prescribe it for morning sickness (to both treat and prevent the condition). This is considered an "off-label" use. Other off-label Zofran uses may include the treatment of alcoholism and the treatment or prevention of chronic nausea or vomiting.

Zofran for nausea and vomiting due to chemotherapy has been studied in children as young as four years old. Zofran for other uses (including radiation and surgery) has not been studied in children. Talk to your healthcare provider about the risks and benefits of using Zofran in children less than four years old.
