Zofran Dosage (Cont.)

Zofran Dosing for Radiation

The dose of Zofran depends on the type of radiation:

  • Total body irradiation: The dose of Zofran for total body irradiation is Zofran 8 mg taken one to two hours before radiotherapy each day of radiation treatment.

  • Single high-dose fraction radiotherapy to the abdomen: The dose of Zofran for this type of radiation is Zofran 8 mg taken one to two hours before radiotherapy followed by Zofran 8 mg every eight hours (three times a day) until one to two days after radiation.

  • Daily fractionated radiotherapy to the abdomen: The dose of Zofran for this type of radiation is Zofran 8 mg taken each day one to two hours before radiotherapy, followed by two more doses each day (taken every eight hours).

Zofran Dosing for Surgery

The dose of Zofran for preventing postoperative nausea and vomiting is 16 mg (two 8 mg tablets) taken one hour before anesthesia is administered.

Zofran Dosing for Children

Zofran has only been studied in children for chemotherapy-associated nausea and vomiting.

  • For children 12 years and older, the dose is the same as the adult dose.

  • For children age 4 through 11, the dose is Zofran 4 mg three times daily. The first dose should be given 30 minutes before the start of chemotherapy. The second dose should be given four hours after the first dose, and the third dose should be given eight hours after the first dose. For one to two days after chemotherapy, Zofran 4 mg should be taken three times a day (about every eight hours).

General Zofran Dosage Information

Some considerations for people taking Zofran include:

  • If you do not take your Zofran as scheduled, take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose of Zofran.

  • Your Zofran dosage can be taken with or without food. If water or food makes you sick to your stomach or you experience nausea after eating or drinking, the orally disintegrating tablets (ODTs) may be especially useful, as they do not require any water (they dissolve in your mouth).

  • For children, the oral solution (liquid) or orally disintegrating tablets (ODTs) may be especially useful. Both are strawberry-flavored.

  • For Zofran orally disintegrating tablets (ODTs), you should keep each tablet in its original blister pack until you need it. Do not try to push the tablet through the foil (the tablet is delicate and would be crushed). Instead, gently peel the foil away and remove the tablet.

  • The dose of Zofran is decreased for people who have poor liver function (hepatic function). People with severely impaired liver function should not take more than 8 mg Zofran total each day.

  • For Zofran to work properly, you have to take it as prescribed. Zofran will not work if you take it differently than how your healthcare provider prescribed it.

  • If you are unsure about anything related to Zofran or your Zofran dosage, please talk to your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. Do not stop taking Zofran without discussing it first with your healthcare provider.
