What Is Zofran Taken For?

Zofran is a medicine that is available only with a prescription. Many people may wonder, "What is it taken for?" Zofran® (ondansetron hydrochloride) is often used for nausea and vomiting due to several causes. Specific uses for the drug include:

  • Prevention of nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy (chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting)
  • Prevention of nausea and vomiting caused by radiation therapy (radiation-induced nausea and vomiting)
  • Prevention of nausea and vomiting caused by surgery (postoperative nausea and vomiting).

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend Zofran for something other than the conditions discussed above. This is called an "off-label" use. At this time, there are a few off-label Zofran uses, such as:

  • Treatment of nausea and vomiting (once it starts)
  • Treatment or prevention of morning sickness (nausea and vomiting during pregnancy)
  • Treatment of alcoholism (alcohol addiction)
  • Treatment or prevention of chronic nausea or vomiting (long-term nausea or vomiting).
