Zevalin Side Effects

If you are undergoing cancer treatment with Zevalin, notify your healthcare provider right away if you develop unusual bruising, muscle pain, or any signs of an infection. Although not everyone who receives this drug will experience problems, most people will develop some type of side effect during treatment. Some of the most commonly reported side effects of Zevalin include fatigue, nausea, and diarrhea.

An Introduction to Zevalin Side Effects

Just like any medicine, Zevalin® (ibritumomab) may cause side effects, some of which can be significant. Although not everyone who receives this medicine will have problems, most people will experience some type of adverse reaction with this drug.

Common Side Effects With Zevalin

Zevalin has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people who received the drug were carefully documented. As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred and how often they appeared.
 
In clinical studies, the most common Zevalin side effects included:
 
  • Low platelet counts -- in up to 62 percent of people
  • Low white blood cell counts -- up to 45 percent
  • Fatigue -- up to 33 percent
  • Low red blood cell counts (anemia) -- up to 22 percent
  • Symptoms of the common cold -- up to 19 percent
  • Nausea -- up to 18 percent
  • Abdominal (stomach) pain -- up to 17 percent
  • Weakness -- up to 15 percent
  • Coughing -- up to 11 percent
  • Diarrhea -- up to 11 percent
  • Fever -- up to 10 percent.
