Zanosar and Breastfeeding

Because there is not enough information available on using Zanosar (streptozocin) while breastfeeding, it is unknown if the drug passes through breast milk or if it would harm a nursing infant. However, based on the properties of the drug, it is expected to pass through breast milk. Due to the potential risks, the manufacturer recommends women not breastfeed during Zanosar treatment.

Can Breastfeeding Women Receive Zanosar?

At this time, it is unknown if Zanosar® (streptozocin) passes through breast milk in women. The manufacturer recommends women receiving Zanosar not breastfeed. Thus, if you are currently nursing a child, talk to your healthcare provider before using this medication.

More Information on Zanosar and Breastfeeding

Zanosar has not been studied in breastfeeding women. Therefore, it is unknown if the medicine passes through breast milk, or if it would harm a nursing child. Based on the properties of Zanosar, it is expected to pass through breast milk to some extent.
While the lack of information is certainly frustrating, it is important to understand that studies of medications are rarely done in breastfeeding women, as doing so would usually expose an infant, who will not directly benefit from the medication, to potentially serious risks.
Zanosar is associated with potentially serious side effects, such as:
  • Kidney damage
  • Liver problems
  • Infections
  • Bleeding
  • Anemia.
Because the risk for these side effects in a nursing child cannot yet be ruled out, it is generally recommended that women not breastfeed during Zanosar treatment.

Talking With Your Healthcare Provider

You should discuss breastfeeding and Zanosar use with your healthcare provider. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision that is right for you.
