Generic Xgeva

When Will a Generic Version Be Available?

It is difficult to predict when a generic Xgeva will be available. Even though the regulations are changing to allow manufacturers to make generic biologics, there is still some rulemaking to be done. In addition, a manufacturer will have to decide to create a generic Xgeva version for one to eventually become available.

Is Denosumab a Generic Xgeva?

No -- denosumab is the name of the active component in Xgeva (as well as in Prolia®), not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of a drug is often referred to as the "generic name."

The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version, the original medicine must have gone off-patent, and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.

Notably, Prolia is not a generic version of Xgeva. It is another brand-name drug that contains the same active ingredient and is used to treat osteoporosis.
