Velcade Side Effects

Clinical trials on Velcade have shown that weakness, diarrhea, and nausea are some of the most common problems that may occur with this drug. As with other chemotherapy medications, it can cause potentially dangerous reactions. If you are undergoing treatment with Velcade and experience side effects like fever, blurred vision, or persistent vomiting, your healthcare provider needs to know right away.

An Introduction to Velcade Side Effects

Just like any chemotherapy medicine, Velcade® (bortezomib) can cause side effects, some of which can be quite significant. Talk to your healthcare provider about ways to prevent or lessen adverse reactions during treatment.

Common Side Effects With Velcade

Velcade has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people given the drug were carefully documented and compared to those that occurred in a group of people receiving other chemotherapy medicines. As a result, it was possible to see what reactions occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the other medicines.
 
In these studies, the most common Velcade side effects included:
 
  • Weakness or lack of energy -- in up to 72 percent of people
  • Diarrhea -- up to 57 percent
  • Nausea -- up to 57 percent
  • Numbness, tingling, or burning sensations of the hands or feet -- up to 55 percent
  • Low platelet counts -- up to 52 percent
  • Constipation -- up to 50 percent
  • Low white blood cell counts -- up to 49 percent
  • Anemia (low red blood cells) -- up to 43 percent
  • Nerve pain -- up to 36 percent
  • Vomiting -- up to 35 percent
  • Fever -- up to 35 percent
  • Mental health problems, such as depression or anxiety -- up to 35 percent
  • Decreased appetite -- up to 34 percent.
