Velcade Off-Label

The approved uses for Velcade® (bortezomib) include the treatment of multiple myeloma (a type of cancer of the bone marrow) and mantle cell lymphoma (a type of cancer of the white blood cells). However, there are also certain circumstances when a healthcare provider may prescribe this medicine for other uses. These are called unapproved, or "off-label," uses. Some of the off-label Velcade uses include treatment of the following conditions:
  • Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma
  • Peripheral T-cell lymphoma
  • Amyloidosis.
As a type of proteasome inhibitor, Velcade works by blocking the action of proteasomes (proteins found inside both healthy and cancerous cells). This causes certain proteins to accumulate within the cancer and healthy cells, causing them to die.
