Velcade Drug Interactions

Velcade Drug Interactions Explained

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when Velcade is combined with any of the drugs listed above.

Ascorbic Acid
According to some studies, ascorbic acid may decrease the effectiveness of Velcade. However, more information is needed to determine if this interaction actually exists. Until more information is known, you should speak with your healthcare provider before using vitamin C supplements during Velcade treatment. Food and beverages that contain vitamin C are generally considered safe to consume.

Clopidogrel
In order to be effective, clopidogrel must be converted by the body into an active form. Velcade may reduce the amount of clopidogrel that is activated by the body, potentially reducing its effectiveness. Talk to your healthcare provider before using these medicines together.

Clozapine
Using clozapine and Velcade together may increase the risk for dangerously low white blood cells, increasing your risk for serious infections. Talk to your healthcare provider before using these medicines together. It is important, however, that you do not stop taking clozapine without first speaking with your healthcare provider.

CYP 3A4 Inducer Medications
The liver breaks down Velcade using enzymes known as CYP 3A4 enzymes. Medications known as CYP 3A4 inducers can increase the activity of these enzymes. Thus, combining Velcade with one of these drugs may decrease the level of Velcade in your body, potentially making it less effective. The manufacturer recommends that Velcade not be used in combination with strong CYP 3A4 inducers.

CYP 3A4 Inhibitor Medications
The liver breaks down Velcade using enzymes known as CYP 3A4 enzymes. Medications known as CYP 3A4 inhibitors can decrease the activity of these enzymes. Thus, combining Velcade with one of these drugs may increase the level of Velcade in your body, potentially increasing your risk for side effects. Your healthcare provider may monitor you more closely for side effects if you take these drugs together.
