Velcade Dosage

Dosing for Relapsed Multiple Myeloma and Mantle Cell Lymphoma

When used to treat multiple myeloma or mantle cell lymphoma in people who did not adequately respond to other treatment, Velcade is usually given twice a week for two weeks, followed by a 10-day break. This represents a 21-day treatment cycle.

The treatment cycle may repeat for up to eight cycles, at which time your healthcare provider will determine if you should continue receiving Velcade. If you continue treatment beyond eight cycles, your healthcare provider may change your Velcade dosage so you only receive the medicine once a week for four weeks, with a 13-day break between each four weeks.

Your healthcare provider will monitor you closely for Velcade side effects. You may need to wait longer between doses, receive a lower dose, or permanently stop the medicine if potentially serious side effects occur. People with moderate-to-severe liver disease may be started on a lower dosage.

General Information on Receiving Velcade

Some considerations to keep in mind during treatment with Velcade include the following:

  • This medication is given as an injection, either into a vein (an intravenous, or IV, injection) or just under the skin (a subcutaneous injection), usually once or twice a week.

  • The injection is administered by a healthcare provider in a healthcare setting, such as a hospital or clinic.

  • You must wait at least 72 hours (three days) between each Velcade dose.

  • Your healthcare provider will tell you if you have to take other medications with Velcade; make sure to follow these directions carefully.

  • When given as a subcutaneous injection, Velcade is usually injected into the thigh or abdomen (stomach). The injection site should vary so that the new site is at least one inch from a previous site.

  • Subcutaneous injections should not be given into areas of the skin that are red, bruised, tender, or otherwise irritated.

  • For the medication to work properly, it must be used as prescribed. It is important to keep all of your appointments to receive your Velcade dose.

  • If you are unsure about anything related to your dosage or Velcade dosing in general, please talk to your healthcare provider or pharmacist.
