What Is Triptorelin Used For?

The primary use of triptorelin is for the treatment of advanced prostate cancer. As a hormonal medication, it works by reducing the amount of testosterone made by the body -- this helps stop the growth of prostate cancer cells, which grow in response to testosterone. Unapproved uses for the drug include the treatment of ovarian cancer, early puberty in children, and uterine fibroids.

An Overview of Uses for Triptorelin

Triptorelin pamoate (Trelstar®) is a prescription medication approved for use in advanced prostate cancer. It belongs to a group of drugs called gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists.

Like other GnRH agonists, triptorelin slows the growth of prostate cancer cells and reduces symptoms. It is given as an intramuscular, or IM, injection (an injection given into the muscle) every one, three, or six months.

Prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer in men in the United States. It is mostly a slow-growing cancer. However, some types grow and spread quickly. The cancer cells may spread to the bone, bladder, rectum, lymph nodes, or other areas of the body. Prostate cancer that has spread is called metastatic prostate cancer. It may also be referred to as advanced, or Stage IV, prostate cancer.

Early stages of prostate cancer may not cause any symptoms at all. However, symptoms are common once the disease has progressed. Symptoms of advanced prostate cancer may include:

  • Frequent urination, especially at night
  • An inability to urinate
  • Weak urine flow
  • Pain or burning during urination
  • Difficulty having or maintaining an erection (impotence)
  • Blood in the urine or semen
  • Bone pain.
  •
The treatment for prostate cancer will vary, depending on a number of factors, including the man's age, individual preference, and overall health, as well as how far the cancer has progressed.

Treatment for advanced prostate cancer may include radiation and hormone treatment (see Prostate Cancer Treatment by Stage or Metastatic Prostate Cancer Treatment for more information). The goal of treatment at this stage is to slow further growth and spread of the cancer and ease symptoms, such as pain and difficulty urinating. This is sometimes called palliative treatment.

Triptorelin is a type of hormonal prostate cancer treatment. It may slow the progression of the disease and ease prostate cancer symptoms, but it is not a cure.
