Transitional Cell Carcinoma Treatment (Cont.)

Transitional Cell Carcinoma Treatment: Healthcare Providers

There are usually several healthcare providers involved in a people's transitional cell carcinoma treatment. The doctor may refer patients to doctors who specialize in treating transitional cell carcinoma, or patients may ask for a referral. Specialists who treat transitional cell carcinoma include:

  • Surgeons
  • Urologists
  • Medical oncologists
  • Urologic oncologists.

Transitional Cell Carcinoma Treatment: Getting a Second Opinion

Sometimes it is helpful to have a second opinion about the diagnosis and the transitional cell carcinoma treatment plan. While some insurance companies require a second opinion, others may cover a second opinion if the patient or doctor requests it.

Transitional Cell Carcinoma Treatment Options

The doctor is the best person to describe the transitional cell carcinoma treatment choices and to discuss the expected results. The doctor and patient should work together to develop a transitional cell carcinoma treatment plan that fits the patient's needs. Surgery is the one standard treatment used for ureter and renal pelvis transitional cell carcinoma. Types of surgery include nephroureterectomy and segmental resection of the ureter.

A nephroureterectomy is surgery that is used to remove the entire kidney, the ureter, and the bladder cuff (tissue that connects the ureter to the bladder). A segmental resection of the ureter is a surgical procedure that is used to remove the part of the ureter that contains cancer and some of the healthy tissue around it. The ends of the ureter are then reattached. This treatment is used when the cancer is superficial and in the lower third of the ureter only, near the bladder.
