Trametinib Dosage

The initial dose of trametinib is the same for everyone -- 2 mg taken once daily. However, if you develop serious or intolerable side effects, your dosage may be reduced until your side effects improve. If your side effects do not improve, your healthcare provider may recommend stopping treatment with this medication.

An Introduction to Your Dosage of Trametinib

There is only one standard recommended initial dose of trametinib (Mekinist™), regardless of your age or weight. However, your healthcare provider may adjust the amount if you develop intolerable or serious side effects.
As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

Recommended Trametinib Dosing Guidelines

The usual recommended dosage of trametinib for treating adults with advanced melanoma is 2 mg taken once a day. You will normally continue treatment until your cancer progresses, or you develop potentially dangerous or intolerable side effects.
If you do develop potentially dangerous side effects during treatment, your healthcare provider may reduce your trametinib dosage, recommend you stop treatment until your side effects improve, or stop your treatment altogether. If a lower amount is recommended, doses are normally reduced by 0.5 mg at a time.
Doses lower than 1 mg a day are generally not recommended. Therefore, if you continue experiencing serious side effects while taking trametinib 1 mg a day, you may need to stop treatment with this drug altogether.

General Information on Taking Trametinib

Some considerations to keep in mind during treatment with trametinib include the following:
  • Trametinib comes in the form of a tablet. It is usually taken by mouth once a day.
  • You should take your dose on an empty stomach, one hour before or two hours after a meal.
  • Try to take your dose at about the same time each day to keep an even level of the drug in your bloodstream.
  • For the medication to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed. Do not stop taking this medicine or take a different amount unless your healthcare provider tells you to do so.
  • If you are unsure about anything related to your trametinib dosage, please talk with your healthcare provider, nurse, or pharmacist.
