What Is Toremifene Used For?

If you have breast cancer, you may be able to help slow down progression of the disease by using toremifene. This medicine is approved for certain types of breast cancer that bind to estrogen. It works by binding to the cancer, which prevents the tumor from growing. Toremifene can also be used for off-label reasons, such as to treat other types of cancer.

An Overview of Uses for Toremifene

Toremifene citrate (Fareston®) is a prescription medication approved to treat metastatic breast cancer (cancer that has spread beyond the breasts) in postmenopausal women with estrogen receptor-positive or estrogen receptor-unknown tumors. It belongs to a group of medicines known as selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs).

Understanding Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is a cancer that starts in the tissue of the breast. It is one of the most common types of cancer in women, and is a leading cause of cancer-related death in women. While breast cancer can also occur in men, this is far less common (see Male Breast Cancer for more information).

Anything that increases your chance of getting a disease is called a risk factor. Some risk factors for breast cancer are beyond the control of a woman. For example, older women, women who started menstruating at a younger age, and women with a family history of the disease have a higher risk for developing breast cancer.

Other risk factors, however, are more controllable. Called modifiable risk factors, these include such things as excessive alcohol consumption, being overweight, and long-term use of hormone therapy, such as estrogen therapy (see Breast Cancer Risk Factors for more information).

Not everyone with breast cancer will have early symptoms of the disease. That is why screening is so important (see Breast Cancer Screening). It can help healthcare providers find and treat cancer early. Also, treatment is more likely to work well when the disease is found early.

Several treatment options are available for a woman with breast cancer. In general, treatment may include:

The specific treatment chosen will depend on several factors, including the size of the tumor, how far the cancer has progressed, and a woman's overall health. Many women will receive more than one type of treatment.

Toremifene is a type of hormone therapy used to treat advanced breast cancer that has spread. Like other treatments for advanced breast cancer, it will not cure the disease, but may help a woman live longer.

Toremifene is only approved for treatment of estrogen receptor-positive and estrogen receptor-unknown breast cancer. It will not work to treat estrogen receptor-negative breast cancer.
