Cancer and Toremifene

As a type of anticancer medicine, toremifene citrate (Fareston®) is prescribed to treat certain types of breast cancer. Specifically, this drug is approved to treat metastatic breast cancer (cancer that has spread beyond the breasts) in postmenopausal women with estrogen receptor-positive or estrogen receptor-unknown tumors.

As a type of selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM), toremifene works by binding to estrogen receptors in the body, which prevents estrogen from also binding. As a result, estrogen cannot make the tumor grow and cancer progression is slowed down.
