Thyroid Cancer Treatment By Stage (Cont.)

Stage I and II Papillary and Follicular Thyroid Cancer

Treatment for stage I and stage II papillary and follicular cancer may include:
 
  • Surgery to remove the thyroid (total thyroidectomy), possibly followed by hormone therapy and radioactive iodine
  • Surgery to remove one lobe of the thyroid (lobectomy), followed by hormone therapy
  • Surgery to remove one lobe of the thyroid, followed by radioactive iodine.
 

Stage III Papillary and Follicular Thyroid Cancer

Treatment for stage III papillary and follicular cancer may include:
 
  • Surgery to remove the entire thyroid (total thyroidectomy) and lymph nodes where cancer has spread
  • Total thyroidectomy, followed by radiation therapy with radioactive iodine
  • Total thyroidectomy, followed by external-beam radiation therapy.
 

Stage IV Papillary and Follicular Thyroid Cancer

Treatment for stage IV papillary and follicular thyroid cancer may include:
 
  • Radioactive iodine
  • External-beam radiation therapy
  • Surgery to remove the cancer from places where it has spread
  • Hormone therapy.
 

Medullary Thyroid Cancer

Treatment for medullary cancer may include:
 
  • Total thyroidectomy for tumors in the thyroid only and possible removal of the lymph nodes in the neck
  • Radiation therapy for tumors that come back in the thyroid as palliative treatment to relieve symptoms and improve the patient's quality of life
  • Chemotherapy for cancer that has spread to other parts of the body, as palliative treatment to relieve symptoms and improve the patient's quality of life.
