Stage I Medullary Thyroid Cancer
In stage I medullary
thyroid cancer, the tumor is 2 centimeters or smaller and is only in the thyroid.
Stage II Medullary Thyroid Cancer
In stage II medullary thyroid cancer, the tumor is larger than 2 centimeters but not larger than 4 centimeters and is only found in the thyroid.
Stage III Medullary Thyroid Cancer
In stage III medullary thyroid cancer, the tumor is larger than 4 centimeters, or the tumor may be any size and will have spread just outside the thyroid or to the lymph nodes in the neck.
Stage IVA Medullary Thyroid Cancer
In stage IVA medullary thyroid cancer, the tumor may be any size and will have spread within the neck, to the lymph nodes in the neck or upper chest, or both.
Stage IVB Medullary Thyroid Cancer
In stage IVB medullary thyroid cancer, the tumor may be any size and will have spread to:
- Neck tissues near the backbone
- Blood vessels in the neck or upper chest
- Lymph nodes.
Stage IVC Medullary Thyroid Cancer
In stage IVC, cancer will have spread to other parts of the body, such as the lungs or bones, and may have spread to nearby lymph nodes.
Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer Stages
Anaplastic thyroid cancer is considered to be stage IV thyroid cancer. Anaplastic thyroid cancer grows quickly, has usually spread within the neck when it is found, and usually develops in older people.
Recurrent thyroid cancer means that the cancer has come back after it has been treated. The cancer may come back in the thyroid or in other parts of the body.
