Stage III Papillary or Follicular Thyroid Cancer
In stage III papillary or follicular
thyroid cancer, the cancer is found in patients who are 45 years of age or older. The tumor will be larger than 4 centimeters and will have spread outside of the thyroid and/or to the lymph nodes in the neck.
Stage IVA Papillary or Follicular Thyroid Cancer
In stage IVA papillary or follicular thyroid cancer, cancer is found in patients who are 45 years of age or older. The tumor may be of any size and will have spread within the neck and/or to lymph nodes in the neck or upper chest.
Stage IVB Papillary or Follicular Thyroid Cancer
In stage IVB papillary or follicular thyroid cancer, cancer is found in patients who are 45 years of age or older. The tumor may be of any size and will have spread to:
- Neck tissues near the backbone
- Blood vessels in the neck or upper chest
- Lymph nodes.
Stage IVC Papillary or Follicular Thyroid Cancer
In stage IVC papillary or follicular cancer, cancer will have spread to other parts of the body, such as the lungs or bones, and may have spread to nearby lymph nodes.
Medullary Thyroid Cancer Stages
The following stages are used to describe cases of medullary thyroid cancer:
- Stage 0 (carcinoma in situ)
- Stage I
- Stage II
- Stage III
- Stage IV (divided into substages IVA, IVB, and IVC).
Stage 0 Medullary Thyroid Cancer
In stage 0 medullary thyroid cancer, there is no tumor found in the thyroid but the cancer is detected by screening tests. Stage 0 is also called carcinoma in situ.
