Everything You Need to Know About Scrotal Ultrasounds

Will a Man or Woman Do the Ultrasound?

Many facilities will try to use their male ultrasound technicians for doing scrotal ultrasounds, but sometimes, it's just not possible. So, you might end up with a woman doing the ultrasound. If it really, really bothers you, you can ask for a man, although they might not be able to accommodate your request.

Keep this thought in mind, though: sometimes all the manipulation and touching involved in the ultrasound preparation and procedure inadvertently leads to a bit of arousal. If that ends up happening, would you be more comfortable with a man or a woman doing the ultrasound? There is no right or wrong answer here, but it's just something to think about.

What If I Get Aroused?

This is a very common fear. And yes, it sometimes happens. But not to worry. The ultrasound technician certainly won't worry about it. They've seen everything (and we mean everything), and you're just one of many patients in his or her day.

If it happens, it happens. Either ignore it, apologize about it, or joke about it. Go with whatever makes you feel most comfortable.

Do I Need to Shave?

If you're like most men, shaving your scrotum is not high on your list of fun things to do. In fact, it can be a bit nerve wracking. Plus, you have to deal with the uncomfortable, prickly, itchy aftermath of a scrotal shave.

So, do you need to shave? Typically, no. If you need some sort of surgery (for instance, to repair a hernia) later, then you'll need to shave. But for the ultrasound, shaving is typically unnecessary.
