Cancer and Temodar

A healthcare provider may prescribe Temodar® (temozolomide) to treat certain types of cancer in adults. Specifically, this medicine is used to treat the following brain tumors:

  • Glioblastoma multiforme
  • Anaplastic astrocytomas after certain other chemotherapy medicines have been unsuccessful.

Temodar comes in the form of a capsule that is taken by mouth and as an injection that is given slowly into a vein (intravenous, or IV, infusion). It is approved for use in adults only.

While Temodar can kill both healthy and cancerous cells, it has a greater effect on cells that are growing rapidly. In general, cancer cells grow more quickly than healthy cells and are, therefore, more affected by Temodar. This medicine works by disrupting the replication process of DNA.
