Cancer and Rasburicase

Adults and children who have certain types of cancer may receive rasburicase (Elitek®). It is specifically approved for use in people who are undergoing chemotherapy treatment for leukemia, lymphoma, or cancerous solid tumors. People who are going through treatment for these types of cancer may have an increased risk for developing high uric acid levels, which may lead to kidney failure, seizures, or even death.

Rasburicase works by causing a reaction that converts uric acid into an inactive form that is easier for the body to excrete. This helps to lower uric acid levels, or prevent uric acid levels from increasing in the first place.
