Drug Interactions With Propoxyphene Napsylate

Medications That Cause Drowsiness
Combining propoxyphene napsylate with any other medication that causes drowsiness can increase your risk of side effects, such as drowsiness, confusion, memory loss, or difficulty breathing. Other serious side effects, such as dangerously low blood pressure, may also occur. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking propoxyphene napsylate with such medications.
In addition, combining propoxyphene napsylate with antidepressants may increase the risk of a group of symptoms called serotonin syndrome. Some of these symptoms include:
  • Confusion
  • Hallucinations
  • A fast heartbeat
  • Feeling faint
  • Fever
  • Sweating
  • Muscle spasms
  • Difficulty walking
  • Diarrhea.
Talk to your healthcare provider before taking propoxyphene napsylate with an antidepressant. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any of these symptoms, as serotonin syndrome can be dangerous.
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)
As mentioned previously, combining propoxyphene napsylate with antidepressants (including MAOIs) can increase the risk of serotonin syndrome. Due to the high risk of this problem, it is usually recommended that propoxyphene napsylate not be combined with an MAOI. Do not take these drugs within 14 days of each other.
There have been reports of a possible interaction between propoxyphene napsylate and warfarin. This interaction might increase your risk of bleeding. Check with your healthcare provider before combining these medications; you may need to be monitored more closely.
