Ponatinib Side Effects

Some of the possible side effects of ponatinib include nausea, dry skin, and a rash. A majority of people who take this drug will develop some type of reaction. This prescription chemotherapy product is also associated with potentially serious problems, such as liver damage, blood clots, and heart attacks. If you develop anything like this, seek immediate medical treatment.

An Introduction to Side Effects of Ponatinib

Just like any medicine, ponatinib (Iclusig®) can cause side effects. In fact, most people will experience some type of reaction to this drug, and some side effects can be quite significant. Talk to your healthcare provider about ways to prevent or lessen reactions to this medicine.

Serious Ponatinib Side Effects

Some side effects of ponatinib are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
 
  • Signs of a blood clot in the leg, such as:
    • Pain in the calf
    • Leg cramps
    • Leg or foot swelling
 
  • Signs of a blood clot in the lung, such as:
    • Shortness of breath
    • Sharp chest pain
    • Coughing up blood
 
  • Sudden loss of vision or vision changes, which can be a sign of a blood clot in the eye
  • Signs of a stroke, such as:
    • Vision or speech changes
    • Weakness or numbness in an arm or leg
    • A severe headache
 
  • Signs of liver damage, such as:
    • Yellowing of the whites of the eyes or skin (jaundice)
    • Dark urine
    • Upper-right abdominal (stomach) pain
    • Elevated liver enzymes (found using a blood test)
 
  • Chest pain or heaviness, which may be signs of a heart attack
  • Signs of congestive heart failure (CHF), such as shortness of breath and unexplained sudden weight gain
  • Very high blood pressure
  • Signs of pancreatitis, such as persistent, severe abdominal (stomach) and/or back pain and vomiting
  • Fluid retention (gaining "water weight")
  • An irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia)
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Unexplained swelling, especially of the mouth, lips, or throat
    • Wheezing or difficulty breathing
    • Difficulty swallowing
 
  • Signs of an infection, such as:
 
  • Signs of anemia, such as:
    • Weakness
    • Unusual fatigue
    • Pale skin
    • Shortness of breath
    • Dizziness
 
  • Any unusual bleeding or bruising
  • Black, tarry, or bloody stools
  • Blood in the urine, which could appear as pink or red-colored urine.
