Pentostatin Side Effects

When clinical trials were done on pentostatin, a majority of people who received this chemotherapy drug developed some type of side effect. Some of the most commonly reported problems included nausea, fever, and a rash. Some of the side effects of pentostatin are potentially dangerous. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you develop serious problems like unusual bleeding, confusion, or vision changes.

 

An Introduction to Side Effects of Pentostatin

As with any chemotherapy medicine, pentostatin (Nipent®) can cause side effects. In fact, most people will experience some type of reaction to this drug, and some side effects can be quite significant. Talk to your healthcare provider about ways to prevent or lessen reactions to this medicine.

Serious Pentostatin Side Effects

Some side effects of pentostatin are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
 
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Unexplained swelling, especially of the mouth, lips, or throat
    • Wheezing
    • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
 
  • Signs of infection, such as:
 
  • Signs of anemia, such as:
    • Unusual tiredness
    • Weakness
    • Pale skin
    • Shortness of breath
 
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising
  • Numbness, tingling, or pricking sensations
  • Muscle weakness
  • Confusion
  • Memory problems
  • Loss of coordination
  • Yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes (jaundice)
  • Changes in how often or how much you urinate
  • Shortness of breath
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Changes in vision
  • Changes in hearing
  • Mouth or throat sores, ulcers, or blisters.
