Pentostatin Dosage

When using pentostatin for treating hairy cell leukemia, the dosage is usually calculated based on how much you weigh and your height, along with several other factors. This prescription chemotherapy medication comes as a powder that is mixed with liquid and given as an injection into a vein once every other week. It can take anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes to receive your pentostatin dosage.

An Introduction to Your Dosage of Pentostatin

The dose of pentostatin (Nipent®) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a few factors, such as:
  • Your height and weight
  • How you tolerate the medication
  • How you respond to pentostatin
  • Other medical conditions you may have.
As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

Recommended Pentostatin Dosing Guidelines

Like many other anticancer medicines, pentostatin doses are normally based on body surface area, which is calculated using your height and weight. Doses based on body surface area are written as mg per meter squared (mg per m2).
The usual recommended dosage of pentostatin for the treatment of hairy cell leukemia is 4 mg per m2 every other week. Doses higher than this are not recommended, as they can cause more side effects. People with kidney disease may need to be treated with lower amounts.
Your healthcare provider will monitor your progress and determine how long you will need treatment. It usually continues until a complete response is achieved, which is defined as no detectable leukemia cells and normal blood cell counts.
If you have not adequately responded within 6 to 12 months, your healthcare provider may recommend you stop treatment. You may also need to stop treatment if you experience certain potentially serious pentostatin side effects.
