Because
pazopanib (
Votrient®) may cause fetal harm if taken during pregnancy, the manufacturer recommends that women take precautions to not become pregnant while taking this cancer medicine. When pazopanib was given to pregnant animals, it increased the risk for miscarriage, low body weight, and bone and heart defects. As a result of these complications, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classified pazopanib as a pregnancy Category D drug.
Although it is generally not recommended for use during pregnancy, pazopanib may be prescribed if the benefits to the woman outweigh the possible risks to her unborn child.
