Colon Cancer and Oxaliplatin

A healthcare provider may prescribe oxaliplatin (Eloxatin®) to treat certain types of rectal and colon cancer in adults. Specifically, oxaliplatin is approved to treat advanced colorectal cancer and stage III colon cancer, after surgery to remove the tumor.

Oxaliplatin is a type of platinum-based medication and is used in combination with other medications. It works by binding together strands of DNA within the cells, including cancer cells. This prevents the cells from multiplying, which can stop the growth and spread of the cancer.
