Onsolis Uses

Obtaining Onsolis

This medication is only available through a special pharmacy program, called the Focus™ Program. In order to obtain Onsolis, your healthcare provider and you or your legally authorized representative must be enrolled in the Focus Program for Onsolis. Your healthcare provider will help you enroll in the program.

The Focus Program helps ensure everyone involved in Onsolis use, including you, your healthcare providers, and caregivers, are educated about the safe use of the medication. In general, the program works in the following manner:

  • Your healthcare provider will review the Onsolis Medication Guide with you and give you a copy to take home.
  • Together, you and your healthcare provider will fill out the Focus Program enrollment form.
  • Your healthcare provider will send in the enrollment form along with your Onsolis prescription.
  • Once your enrollment form is received, someone from the Focus Program will call you to talk more about Onsolis safety and schedule a delivery.

How Does Onsolis Work?

Onsolis contains fentanyl, a strong opioid narcotic medication. It comes in the form of a film, which sticks to the inside of the cheek. As the film dissolves, fentanyl is absorbed through the lining of your mouth.

Fentanyl works by binding to opioid mu-receptors throughout the body, producing many different effects. Some of these effects, such as pain relief, are desirable; other effects, such as slowing down the digestive tract, are undesirable and lead to side effects such as constipation.

The effects of fentanyl include but are not limited to:

  • Pain relief
  • Drowsiness
  • Changes in mood, including feelings of unease (dysphoria) or unusually pleasant feelings (euphoria)
  • Cough suppression
  • Slowed or shallow breathing
  • Slowing of the digestive tract
  • Pupil constriction
  • Itching
  • Physical dependence.
