Nilotinib Side Effects

As with most chemotherapy drugs, side effects are likely to occur with nilotinib. Some of the most common reactions to this drug include headaches, constipation, and coughing. There are also potentially serious nilotinib side effects, such as fever, difficulty breathing, and yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes, which should be reported to your healthcare provider right away.

An Introduction to Side Effects of Nilotinib

Just like any medicine, nilotinib (Tasigna®) can cause side effects. Like most cancer medications, the side effects can be significant. Although not everyone who takes the medicine will have problems, most people will experience some type of side effect during nilotinib treatment. Talk to your healthcare provider about ways to manage these side effects.

Serious Nilotinib Side Effects

Some side effects of nilotinib are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
 
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
 
    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Unexplained swelling, especially of the mouth, lips, or throat
    • Wheezing
    • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
 
  • Signs of infection, such as:
 
 
  • Shortness of breath or a new or worsening cough
  • Yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes (jaundice), which could be a sign of liver problems
  • Lightheadedness, dizziness, or fainting
  • Extreme tiredness or fatigue
  • An irregular heartbeat
  • Sudden abdominal (stomach) pain with nausea and vomiting
  • Vision changes, confusion, or a severe headache
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising
  • Black, tarry, or bloody stools
  • Vomiting blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds
  • Blood in the urine
  • Swelling in your hands, legs, ankles, or feet or a sudden weight gain.
