Drug Interactions With Nilotinib

Live Vaccinations
Live vaccines are vaccines that contain live viruses or bacteria. If you receive a live vaccine while taking nilotinib, you might become infected with the virus or bacteria from the vaccine. Also, live vaccines may be less effective in people taking nilotinib. Talk to your healthcare provider before receiving a vaccination or immunization while taking this medication.

QT-Prolonging Medications
Nilotinib can cause a certain change in the heart rhythm known as QT prolongation. Taking nilotinib with other medications that may cause QT prolongation can increase your risk for this potentially life-threatening problem. Your healthcare provider may need to monitor you for this problem if you take nilotinib with another QT-prolonging medication.

Natalizumab
Combining nilotinib with natalizumab may increase your risk for developing infections, including potentially serious infections. It is generally recommended that these medications not be taken together.

P-Glycoprotein (Pgp) Inhibitors
P-glycoprotein is a natural protein that helps remove substances, such as medications, from the tissues in the body, so they can be excreted through the urine or feces. Pgp helps remove nilotinib from the body. Certain medications known as Pgp inhibitors decrease the activity of Pgp.

Taking nilotinib with one of these Pgp inhibitors causes nilotinib to be removed from the body more slowly, potentially increasing nilotinib blood levels and increasing your risk for side effects. Your healthcare provider may choose to monitor you more closely for side effects if you take nilotinib with a Pgp inhibitor.

Pimecrolimus
In general, people taking nilotinib should not use pimecrolimus because of an increased risk for infection, lymphoma (cancer of the lymph nodes), and skin cancer. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking these medicines together.
