Neupogen and Breastfeeding

Since no studies have been conducted on Neupogen and breastfeeding, it is unknown whether the drug passes through breast milk. Because Neupogen can be destroyed in the digestive tract, it probably will not cause problems in a breastfed infant even if it passes through breast milk. While problems will not likely occur with Neupogen, breastfeeding women should talk to their healthcare providers before using the medicine.

 

Neupogen and Breastfeeding: An Overview

Neupogen® (filgrastim) is a medication used to stimulate the production of certain white blood cells called neutrophils. Neutrophils are very important for fighting off infections. At this time, it is not known whether Neupogen passes through breast milk. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding or thinking of starting, make sure to let your healthcare provider know.
 

Neupogen and Breastfeeding: What Does the Research Say?

Neupogen has not been studied in any breastfeeding women, and it is not known if it passes through breast milk. Theoretically, Neupogen would probably not cause any problems in breastfed infants. Neupogen is a protein that must be given by injection, since the digestive system would destroy the protein. If Neupogen passes through breast milk, it would be digested (and destroyed) in the digestive systems of breastfed infants.
