Drug Interactions With Morphine Sulfate/Naltrexone Hydrochloride

More Details on Interactions With Morphine Sulfate/Naltrexone Hydrochloride

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when morphine sulfate/naltrexone hydrochloride is combined with any of the drugs listed above.

Alcohol
You must not take morphine sulfate/naltrexone hydrochloride and consume alcohol. Alcohol increases the risk of serious side effects, such as extreme drowsiness, confusion, memory loss, or difficulty breathing. Even more importantly, alcohol causes the slow-release beads in the morphine sulfate/naltrexone hydrochloride capsules to release morphine too quickly, possibly resulting in an overdose. You must avoid all alcohol (including alcohol in medicines and foods) while taking morphine sulfate/naltrexone hydrochloride.

Alvimopan
Morphine sulfate/naltrexone hydrochloride may increase the risk of serious alvimopan side effects. You should not take alvimopan if you have taken morphine sulfate/naltrexone hydrochloride for each of the past seven days.

Antidepressant Medications
Combining an antidepressant with morphine sulfate/naltrexone hydrochloride could increase your risk of side effects, such as drowsiness, confusion, memory loss, or difficulty breathing. Serious side effects may occur. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking morphine sulfate/naltrexone hydrochloride with an antidepressant, as you may need to be monitored more closely and the dose of your medications may need to be adjusted.

Antihistamines
Many antihistamines cause significant drowsiness and can cause serious problems when used in combination with other medications that cause drowsiness, such as morphine sulfate/naltrexone hydrochloride. Check with your healthcare provider before taking morphine sulfate/naltrexone hydrochloride with an antihistamine, including nonprescription antihistamines.
