When and How to Take Morphine Sulfate ER
Some general considerations include the following:
- The medication comes in the form of extended-release tablets or capsules. It is taken by mouth, usually every 8, 12, or 24 hours (depending on the particular product), around-the-clock. It is not meant to be taken "as needed" (at unscheduled times and only when needed for pain). Avinza is taken every 24 hours, Kadian is taken every 12 or 24 hours, and Oramorph SR and MS Contin are both taken every 8 or 12 hours.
- It does not matter if you take the medication with food or on an empty stomach. If the medication bothers your stomach, try taking it with food.
- Never crush, chew, or dissolve the tablets or capsules, as this would release a dangerous amount of morphine. Also, never take a tablet or capsule that appears to be damaged in any way.
- For most morphine sulfate ER products, you must not consume any alcohol while on the medication, as this may cause the medication to release too much morphine too quickly.
- For the medication to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed. Do not increase your dose without your healthcare provider's approval. Also, do not suddenly stop taking the medication, especially if you have taken it regularly for more than a few days.
The dose that your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:
- The particular morphine sulfate ER product
- How you respond to the medication
- The type and dose of other painkillers you have taken
- The type and severity of your pain
- Other medications you are taking
- Other medical conditions you may have.
As is always the case, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.
