Mercaptopurine for Ulcerative Colitis

Adults and children who have a type of cancer called acute lymphatic leukemia (ALL) may benefit from chemotherapy treatment with mercaptopurine (Purinethol®). This drug belongs to a group of medicines called purine analogs, and works by disrupting the replication process of cancer cells.

On occasion, a healthcare provider may recommend mercaptopurine to treat ulcerative colitis or certain other medical conditions. However, these are not approved uses for the drug and are referred to as "off-label" uses.
