6-Mercaptopurine for Crohn's

Mercaptopurine (Purinethol®) is a prescription medication approved to treat a type of cancer called acute lymphatic leukemia (ALL). Also called 6-mercaptopurine or 6-MP, mercaptopurine works by interrupting the multiplication process of DNA, which helps slow down the growth of cancer cells.

There may also be situations when a healthcare provider may prescribe 6-mercaptopurine to treat Crohn's disease. However, this is considered an off-label (unapproved) use for the medication.
