If you have leukemia, lymphoma, or cancerous solid tumors, you may need a medication called rasburicase. This medicine is used to help control uric acid levels, which may become high in people who are undergoing chemotherapy treatment for these specific forms of cancer. It is approved for use in adults and children. Rasburicase can also be used to treat gout, although this is an unapproved ("off-label") use.
- Intravenous (IV) fluids to ensure a person remains adequately hydrated
- Treatments to reduce uric acid, especially if uric acid levels are high
- Frequent monitoring of electrolytes, such as phosphate, calcium, and potassium.
