Rasburicase (Elitek®) is a prescription medication approved to control uric acid levels, which can become dangerously high in people who are undergoing certain types of chemotherapy treatment. Specifically, this drug is used in adults and children who are going through chemotherapy treatment for lymphoma, leukemia, or cancerous solid tumors. These forms of treatment can cause high levels of uric acid to build up in the body, which may lead to seizures, coma, and even death.
There may also be situations when a healthcare provider may prescribe rasburicase to treat gout. However, this is considered an off-label (unapproved) use for the medication.
