When Will Generic Ontak Be Available?

At this time, it is difficult to predict when a generic Ontak medication will be available. Previously, regulations did not allow generic biologic versions to be made. However, the regulations are currently changing to allow manufacturers to create biologic products that are similar to ones already approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Even with the changing regulations, however, a manufacturer will have to decide to create a generic version of Ontak for one to eventually become available.

Is Denileukin Diftitox a Generic Ontak?

No -- denileukin diftitox is the active ingredient in Ontak, but is not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of a drug is often referred to as the "generic name."
The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version, the original medicine must have gone off-patent and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.
