Your surgeon may need to change from a laparoscopic to an open surgery, after your operation has started. There are several reasons why this may happen. Your surgeon may be having difficulty seeing your uterus and the organs around it clearly enough. There may be additional problems that your surgeon only sees after the surgery starts. Or there may be an unforeseen problem that occurs, such as damage to the intestine or bladder, that may be life-threatening or may require a larger incision to take care of.
If your surgeon changes from a laparoscopic to an open surgery, you will have a longer incision in your abdomen, and it may take longer for you to recover.
