Cancer Home > Emend and Breastfeeding

Since the link between Emend and breastfeeding is not fully understood, it is generally recommended that breastfeeding women avoid taking the drug. No clinical studies have been conducted on whether Emend is passed through breast milk, so it's possible that there could be potential risks to the nursing infant. If you are taking Emend and breastfeeding (or thinking about breastfeeding), make sure to talk to your healthcare provider.

An Overview of Emend and Breastfeeding

It is unknown if Emend® (aprepitant) passes through breast milk in breastfeeding women. The manufacturer of Emend does not recommend taking the drug while breastfeeding.

Emend and Breastfeeding: What Does the Research Say?

No studies have been conducted on whether Emend passes through breast milk in humans. Additionally, it is also unknown if Emend would cause any problems in breastfed infants. It is known that the drug passes through breast milk in rats and may increase the risk of tumors in rats. If your healthcare provider recommends that you take Emend while breastfeeding, be sure to watch for any side effects in your infant.

You may be wondering why no studies have been conducted on whether Emend passes through breast milk in humans. In many situations, such studies would be considered unethical. These studies would potentially put infants (who cannot themselves consent to these studies) at risk. In general, most information about breastfeeding and medications is obtained through cases outside of formal clinical studies.
