Stages of Liver Cancer (Cont.)

Stage IV Liver Cancer
In stage IV liver cancer, cancer has spread beyond the liver to other places in the body, such as the bones or lungs. The tumors may be of any size and may also have spread to nearby blood vessels, lymph nodes, or both.

Recurrent Liver Cancer
Recurrent adult primary liver cancer is cancer that has recurred (come back) after it has been treated. The cancer may come back in the liver or in other parts of the body.

Stages of Liver Cancer Based on Treatment

For adult primary liver cancer, stages of liver cancer are also grouped according to how the cancer may be treated. There are three treatment groups:

Localized Resectable
In these cases of liver cancer:

  • The cancer is found in the liver only
  • It has not spread
  • It can be completely removed by surgery.

Localized and Locally Advanced Unresectable
In localized and locally advanced unresectable cases of liver cancer:

  • The cancer is found in the liver only
  • The cancer has not spread
  • The cancer cannot be completely removed by surgery.

Advanced
In advanced stage liver cancer, the cancer has spread throughout the liver or has spread to other parts of the body, such as the lungs and bones.
