MRI
An MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan is a procedure that uses a magnet, radio waves, and a computer to make a series of detailed pictures of areas inside the body. This procedure is also called nuclear magnetic resonance imaging (NMRI).
Bone Scan
This is a procedure that is performed to check if there are rapidly dividing cells, such as cancer cells, in the bone. A very small amount of radioactive material is injected into a vein and travels through the bloodstream. The radioactive material collects in the bones and is detected by a scanner.
Doppler Ultrasound
Doppler ultrasound is a type of ultrasound that uses differences in the ultrasound echoes to measure the speed and direction of blood flow.
Specific Stages of Liver Cancer
The following stages of
liver cancer are used to describe adult primary liver cancer:
- Stage I
- Stage II
- Stage III
- Stage IV
- Recurrent.
For adult primary liver cancer, stages of liver cancer are also grouped according to how the cancer may be treated. There are three treatment groups:
- Localized resectable
- Localized and locally advanced unresectable
- Advanced.
Stage I Liver Cancer
In stage I liver cancer:
- There is one tumor
- It has not spread to nearby blood vessels.
Stage II Liver Cancer
In stage II liver cancer, there is either:
- One tumor that has spread to nearby blood vessels
- More than one tumor, none of which is larger than 5 centimeters.
Stage III Liver Cancer
Stage III liver cancer is subdivided into stages IIIA, IIIB, and IIIC.
In stage IIIA liver cancer, there is either:
- More than one tumor larger than 5 centimeters
- One tumor that has spread to a major branch of blood vessels near the liver.
In stage IIIB liver cancer, there are one or more tumors of any size that have either:
- Spread to nearby organs other than the gallbladder
- Broken through the lining of the peritoneal cavity.
In stage IIIC liver cancer, the cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes.
