An Introduction to Researching Liver Cancer
Doctors and scientists are hard at work conducting research on
liver cancer. Research studies are designed to answer important questions and to find out whether new approaches are safe and effective.
Liver cancer research already has led to many advances, and researchers continue to search for more effective methods for dealing with liver cancer. But controlling liver cancer remains a challenge, and researchers continue to search for more effective ways to treat this disease.
Current Areas of Focus in Liver Cancer Research
Laboratory scientists are studying the liver to learn more about what may cause liver cancer and how liver cancer cells work.
They are also looking for new therapies to kill cancer cells.
One treatment being studied is biological therapy. Biological therapy is a treatment that uses the patient's immune system to fight cancer. Substances made by the body (or in a laboratory) are used to boost, direct, or restore the body's natural defenses against cancer. This type of cancer treatment is also called biotherapy or immunotherapy.
Hyperthermia therapy is another treatment that scientists are studying. With hyperthermia therapy, body tissue is exposed to high temperatures to damage and kill cancer cells or to make cancer cells more sensitive to the effects of radiation and certain anticancer drugs. Because some cancer cells are more sensitive to heat than normal cells are, the cancer cells die and the tumor shrinks.
