Lazanda Uses

The narcotic drug Lazanda is used to relieve sudden flares of pain that occur in adults with cancer, despite their use of around-the-clock pain medication. This medicine comes in the form of a nasal spray and works by blocking certain opioid receptors in the body. In some cases, Lazanda can be prescribed off-label to treat breakthrough pain in people with conditions other than cancer.

What Is Lazanda Used For?

Lazanda® (fentanyl nasal spray) is a prescription opioid nasal spray approved to treat breakthrough cancer pain. Breakthrough pain refers to intense flares of pain that occur despite around-the-clock pain medication. Because Lazanda is a fast-acting drug, it can be used as needed to help relieve pain that "breaks through" regularly scheduled pain medication.

Lazanda is only approved for use in people who have already been using opioids and who are tolerant to their effects. In general, people are considered opioid tolerant if they have been taking at least 60 mg of morphine, 30 mg of oxycodone, 8 mg of hydromorphone, 25 mcg of fentanyl patch (Duragesic®), or an equivalent dose of another opioid every day for at least a week.

Lazanda is a Schedule II controlled substance because it has a high potential for abuse. Schedule II medications are considered to have the highest abuse potential of all prescription medicines. Therefore, there are strict rules and regulations for prescribing and obtaining them.

Because of the potential for abuse and overdose with this medication, it can only be obtained through a restricted program known as the Lazanda Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) program. You, your healthcare provider, and the pharmacy that dispenses your medication must be enrolled in the Lazanda REMS for you to receive the medication. Your healthcare provider will talk to you about Lazanda and the REMS program.
