Drug Interactions With Lapatinib

Medications that may cause drug interactions with lapatinib include rifamycin antibiotics, nefazodone, and protease inhibitors. These interactions can affect the level of lapatinib in your blood or increase your risk of developing heart failure or an irregular heart rhythm called QT prolongation. To help prevent potentially serious drug interactions with lapatinib, tell your healthcare provider about all other drugs you are taking.

 

Drug Interactions With Lapatinib: An Overview

Lapatinib (Tykerb®) can potentially interact with other medications. Some of the medicines that may lead to lapatinib drug interactions include:
 
  • Anthracycline chemotherapy medications, such as:
o Daunorubicin (Cerubidine®, DaunoXome®)
o Doxorubicin (Adriamycin®, Doxil®)
o Idarubicin (Idamycin®)
o Mitoxantrone (Novantrone®)
o Valrubicin (Valstar®)
  • Certain antibiotics or antifungals, such as:
o Ciprofloxacin (Cipro®, Cipro XR®)
o Clarithromycin (Biaxin®, Biaxin XL®)
o Erythromycin (Ery-Tab®)
o Gemifloxacin (Factive®)
o Isoniazid (Nydrazid®)
o Itraconazole (Sporanox®)
o Ketoconazole (Nizoral®)
o Levofloxacin (Levaquin®)
o Miconazole
o Mefloquine (Lariam®)
o Moxifloxacin (Avelox®)
o Norfloxacin (Noroxin®)
o Ofloxacin (Floxin®)
o Telithromycin (Ketek®)
o Troleandomycin (Tao®)
  • Certain seizure medications, such as:
o Carbamazepine (Carbatrol®, Epitol®, Equetro™, Tegretol®, Tegretol XR®)
o Fosphenytoin (Cerebyx®)
o Phenobarbital (Luminal®)
o Pentobarbital (Nembutal®)
  • Medications that cause an irregular heart rhythm called QT prolongation (see QT Prolonging Medications for a more detailed list), including:
o Alfuzosin (Uroxatral®)
o Apomorphine (Apokyn®)
o Chloroquine (Aralen®)
o Certain anesthetics
o Certain antibiotics
o Certain arrhythmia medications
o Certain cancer medications
o Certain nausea and vomiting medications
o Certain phenothiazine or antipsychotic medications
o Cisapride (Propulsid®)
o Cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril®, Fexmid™)
o Methadone (Dolophine®)
o Octreotide (Sandostatin®)
o Pentamidine (NebuPent®, Pentam®)
o Ranolazine (Ranexa®)
o Tacrolimus (Prograf®)
 
 
 
  • Protease inhibitors, such as:
 
  • Rifamycin antibiotics, including rifabutin (Mycobutin®), rifampin (Rifadin®), and rifapentine (Priftin®)
