Abnormal uterine bleeding is having bleeding that is different from your normal period. For some women, this means they have a longer period or for other women, this means having periods more than once a month. Bleeding that occurs between your periods is also considered abnormal uterine bleeding.
There are many things that can make this happen. An imbalance of the hormones in your body can cause your ovaries to release an egg at the wrong time, or not release an egg at all. When either of these things happens, your menstrual cycle is disturbed, and the lining of your uterus becomes thicker. Your period might be longer or heavier as your body naturally sheds this lining.
These hormonal changes may be caused by:
· Blood clots
· Certain medications
· Heavy exercise
· Gaining or losing weight.
Other conditions that may lead to abnormal uterine bleeding include:
· Fibroids, which are abnormal growths in the uterus
· An infection of your uterus
· Pregnancy, both normal and abnormal
· Diabetes
· Thyroid problems
· Some types of cancer
· Problems with blood clotting
· Reactions to certain methods of birth control.
For many women, taking hormones or anti-inflammatories can control the problem. When medicine doesn't work, surgery may be necessary. Your healthcare provider can discuss any questions you might have about your condition, and your treatment options.
