LAVH Risks -- Air Insufflation Injuries
During surgery with the laparoscopic camera, the doctor must put air into the abdomen. The air helps the doctor see all the organs inside.
One problem can happen when the air goes into another part of your abdomen. Sometimes, gas goes into the layers of skin that hold your abdomen in. Usually the doctor can see this right away and fix it. But, if too much air goes in the wrong place, he or she may have to stop the surgery and do it later.
Another reason to stop the surgery is if the air gets into the bowels or another organ. This is very rare, but can be dangerous or life-threatening.
